FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
LIBRARY HOURS
Q. When is the library open?
A. The library is open for students and staff from 7:40 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday, unless there is a scheduled meeting. If library hours change, whenever possible, announcements will be made over the P.A. system in the morning, and/or a notice will be put on the doors.
BORROWING
Q. How many items may students borrow?
A. Students may borrow up to three items at a time.
Q. Is a student card needed to borrow items?
A. It is preferred, but not required, that students present their student cards at the time of borrowing items.
Q. For how long may items be borrowed?
A. Books may be borrowed for two weeks; graphic novels may be borrowed for three days; magazines may be borrowed for one day.
Q. Are there overdue fines?
A. If a student has overdue items, further borrowing is not permitted until these items have been handed in. Overdue fines are charged for lost or missing books at the end of a school year.
Q. How do students know if they have overdue items?
A. There is a list at the circulation desk in the library. It is updated regularly.
Q. How can a loan be renewed?
A. The borrowed item must be brought to the circulation desk and it may be renewed there.
Q. May a book be reserved?
A. Books may be reserved at the circulation desk.
Q. May magazines be borrowed?
A. Magazines may be borrowed for one night and returned first thing in the morning.
Q. May videos and DVD's be borrowed?
A. DVD's and videos which belong to the library may be borrowed overnight. Items owned by other school departments may not be loaned to students.
CATALOGUE USE
Q. Where is the library catalogue of resources?
A. There is an online version on this site. There are two computer terminals on the west wall of the library.
Q. How do I find novels or books on specific subjects?
A. Use the library catalogue. You may search for items using a keyword, a subject, an author, or a title.
PHOTOCOPYING AND PRINTING
Q. How much does photocopying cost?
A. A black and white photocopy costs ten cents. We do not offer colour or transparency copying in the library.
Q. How much does printing costs?
A. We have a black ink printer only and it costs ten cents per page. Payment must be up front.
LIBRARY COMPUTER USE
Q. May the library databases be accessed from home?
A. Yes. Access them from this site.
Q. Does the library have e-mail access?
A. The e-mail access available to students is Abbynet.
Q. What programs are available for students?
A. Microsoft Office (including Word, Publisher, Excel, Powerpoint). There may be others also.
Q. May I download vidoes, games, and music files?
A. This is strictly prohibited. Violaters will be told to leave the library.
Q. How may documents and files be saved?
A. Documents and files may be saved for students to access again on school computers by saving them on "My Computer" and then going to their own names. Files may also be sent home on Abbynet. Or, students may wish to use flash drives which they must purchase at their own cost.
FINDING INFORMATION AND RESOURCES
A. Does the library have daily newspapers?
Q. The library subscribes to The Vancouver Sun and The Province. The Abbotsford Times and The Abbotsford News are also delivered to the school.
A. Where I do find resources for research projects?
Q. The library has books, the Internet, and databases. Ask a librarian to help you.
