Planning 10 Web Resources
Although the following web sites do not have Recommended status, they have been provided as
support for teachers in instruction and assessment in Planning 10. As with all supplementary
resources, local approval is required before use.
Teachers should preview the sites in order to select those that are appropriate for use by their students, and must also ensure that students are aware of school district policies on Internet and computer use.
The selected web sites are not intended to represent an exhaustive list; rather these sites, current
as of March 2006, represent a “starter set” of potentially useful sites relevant to one or more of
the four curriculum organizers of the Planning 10 curriculum. Many of the sites also link to
additional resources for teachers and students. To further assist teachers, many of the sites, or
more specific pages within the site, are also listed individually in the relevant sections of the
Classroom Assessment Model. In the following annotations, quotation marks indicate siteprovided
descriptions.
Achieve BC
“This web site brings together the latest educational tools and information for promoting learning
and achievement in early childhood, grade school, post-secondary education, and the world of
work.”
Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada
Provides descriptions of most Canadian accredited universities and university-colleges and their
programs of study, as well as links to their web sites.
Awards: Passport to Education and Scholarships
Provides Passport information and links to other web sites for awards and scholarships, including
BC Awards Online.
BC Anti-Racism and Multiculturalism Program
“The primary goal of the BC Anti-Racism and Multiculturalism Program (BCAMP) is the
elimination of racism in British Columbia.”
BC Centre for Disease Control
“BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) is British Columbia’s Centre of Excellence for the
prevention, detection, and control of communicable disease, and a provider of specialty health
support and resource services.”
BC Council on Admission and Transfer
“The official guide to transferring credits between post-secondary institutions in BC. This site also
contains general admissions information and links to all BC public institutions' web sites.”
BC Health Files
“A series of one-page fact sheets on health and safety such as: common illnesses, environmental
health concerns, and health and safety tips. They are regularly updated with the latest BC health
advice.”
BC Human Rights Tribunal
“The BC Human Rights Tribunal is an independent, quasi-judicial body created by the BC Human
Rights Code. The Tribunal is responsible for accepting and resolving human rights complaints in
a way that is fair to the parties.”
BC Partners for Mental Health and Addictions Information
Site provides access to information on mental health, mental disorders, and substance use
problems and disorders. Information is provided by a group of seven provincial mental health and
addictions non-profit agencies: Anxiety Disorders Association of BC, Awareness and Networking
Around Disordered Eating, BC Schizophrenia Society, Canadian Mental Health Association’s BC
Division, Centre for Addictions Research of BC, FORCE Society for Kids’ Mental Health Care,
and Mood Disorders Association of BC.
BC Securities Commission
Includes a glossary of investment terms, describes the basics of successful investing, and
discusses how to avoid Internet fraud. A link for youth provides additional investment information
geared specifically toward this age group.
BC Student Voice
BC Student Voice represents the voice of students throughout fifteen regions in the province.
BC Work InfoNet Youth
“Find job, education, career, and labour market information here.”
British Columbia Injury Prevention Centre
“A community-based injury prevention program dedicated to promoting injury-free living in British
Columbia and its communities. Injury prevention programs are designed to decrease the
incidence and severity of injuries in communities using evidence-based research and best
practices in health promotion.”
Canada Customs and Revenue Agency
Provides access to tax information for individuals. Also, links to Teaching Taxes,
Canada’s tax system and teaching them the practical skill of preparing a basic income tax return.”
Canadian Bankers Association—There’s Something About Money
Provides financial information for youth, parents, and teachers.
Canada Health Portal
“The Canada Health Portal (CHP) provides single-window access to health-related electronic
information and services that cross federal, provincial/territorial, and non-government boundaries
via secure and privacy enhanced technologies.”
Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse
“A non-profit organization working to minimize the harm associated with the use of alcohol,
tobacco, and other drugs.” This site also has information related to gambling addictions.
Canadian HIV/AIDS Information Centre
This site describes itself as “the largest information centre on HIV/AIDS in Canada. The
Information Centre is a program of the Canadian Public Health Association.”
CanLearn Interactive
Information to assist with planning and financing post-secondary education in Canada. Includes
the National Student Loans Service Centre.
Career Education Society of BC
“Updated regularly with the latest career and learning management news, events, and
information.”
Career Gateways
A site designed to assist teachers or individual students in applying many different labour market
and career development resources to their career planning process. Copies of these resources
are on the site. Requires Shockwave.
Career Planning For Students and Parents
“The main emphases of the Career Planning section are the processes for career development—
career awareness, career exploration, career preparation, and work experience.”
Career Paths Online
A BC youth-oriented web site that features a blend of inspiring career stories, labour market
information, and self-assessment tools. Includes the interactive 10-Step Career Planning Guide.
Dieticians of Canada
Dieticians of Canada is an association of food and nutrition professionals committed to the health
and wellbeing of Canadians. Their site provides links to nutrition-related resources and
information.
Directorate of Agencies for School Health (DASH)
“A coalition of local, regional, and provincial organizations and individuals advocating for
programs, services, and research that enable students, families, and communities to develop to
their fullest potential.”
Education Planner
An online guide to post-secondary education programs in BC. Opening Doors contains
information on over1900 programs, additional planning information for students, and a Teacher’s
Corner.
Employment Standards (Ministry of Skills Development and Labour)
Details the Employment Standards Act and Regulation, which “set minimum standards of wages
and working conditions in most workplaces.”
Essential Skills (HRDC)
Shows how essential skills are used in different jobs, most of which can be entered from high
school. Over 190 occupations are profiled. Also includes a User Guide and a collection of
authentic materials used in a wide range of Canadian workplaces with suggestions on how these
materials, or others like them, could be used in classroom activities.
GALEBC (Gay and Lesbian Educators)
GALEBC advocates for a positive environment for all gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered
people within the education system. This web site includes resources for teachers such as
Challenging Homophobia in Schools, sample lesson plans, videos, and fiction and non-fiction
resources.

Most up-to-date source on the BC Graduation Program requirements.
Health Canada Online
as healthy lifestyles, disease prevention, and food safety.
Human Resources and Social Development
Provides a variety of links to career planning tools and resources, self-assessment and aptitude
testing, workplace information, tools for interpreting labour market information, youth employment
programs, and job search strategies.

Provides links to industry training, apprenticeships, career planning, Red Seal and more.
Institute for Safe Schools of British Columbia
“Committed to providing research and resources that support the creation of safe and socially

Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC)
Includes a range of road safety information. A link designed specifically for youth, Geared 2
Youth, provides information on obtaining a license and purchasing insurance. Teachers can also
access the recommended RoadSense resources from this site.
Job Futures 2000
Provides a Canadian perspective on over 200 occupational groups. Includes job duties, earnings,
training required, and work prospects for each group. Also provides an overview of labour market
trends.

“An ever-changing collection of information designed to help Canadians find employment. A link
for teachers enables them to contact researchers, access research documents and databases,
curricula, associations, and departments of education. Extensive career exploration resources
needed to support students through their career decision-making process are provided.”
Labour Relations Board of BC
Includes the posting of over 500 Collective Agreements, information on the Labour Relations
Code, and documentation of decisions made by the Labour Relations Board of BC.
Making Career Sense of Labour Market Information
A resource for career practitioners who help others in making effective career decisions. Includes
information on labour market trends, the economy, and education and training options.
The McCreary Centre Society
The Society’s mission is to “foster wider understanding of the importance of youth health,
increase knowledge about youth health needs and issues, advocate for continuing commitment to
youth health issues, and initiate and implement innovative projects which directly address unmet

Media Awareness Network
“Provides reference materials for use by adults and youth alike in examining media issues from a

National Occupation Classification
“Since its introduction in 1992, the National Occupational Classification system continues to be
the authoritative resource on occupational information in Canada. The NOC is used daily by
thousands of people to understand the jobs found throughout Canada’s labour market.”
Pacific AIDS Resource Centre Library
One of the largest HIV/AIDS libraries and resource centres in North America. Videotapes in the
library’s collection are available for loan throughout British Columbia.
Prevention Source BC
“The provincial prevention resource centre supports organizations and individuals in British
Columbia involved in this prevention of substance misuse.”
Safe, Caring & Orderly Schools
Ministry of Education web site on school safety issues. Includes resources for parents and
educators.
SafeKids BC (BC Ministry of Children and Family Development)
A child abuse prevention web site that provides access to the Helpline for Children in BC, and
includes a “Just for Teens” section and an extensive list of external resources.
Sexuality Education Gateway
“This on-line catalogue (gateway) of classroom lesson plans and learning activities for teachers of
sexuality education has been prepared by the Canadian Association for School Health, with
funding from the Division of Sexual Health Promotion and STD Prevention Control, Health
Canada.”
Start Now! Work Futures for Entry Level Jobs
“Occupational descriptions and information on employment prospects for occupations that permit
entry into the labour market with little or no post-secondary education and little or no previous
work experience.”

Street Cents
Street Cents is a CBC television consumer program for youth.
Student Financial Aid
This Ministry of Advanced Education site provides financial aid information including online
application forms.
Substance Misuse Prevention (Ministry of Health Services)
Site links to “programs and services to prevent problematic substance use or dependence.”
Taking a Stand
Provides access to resources and information on youth violence and crime issues. Examples of
community initiatives, online access to the Youth Against Violence Line, and interactive games
and activities can be reached from this site.
Tobacco Facts (Ministry of Health Services)
Site links to resources such as Kick the Nic and Gasp, as well as tools, information,
downloadable posters, and pictures.

A catalogue of labour market information to help young people and adult job seekers make more
informed career plans and choices.

WorkSafe
“The Workers’ Compensation Board of BC (WCB) is dedicated to promoting workplace health and
safety for the workers and employers of this province.” The Health and Safety Centre links to the
Young Worker site, WorkSafe resources, and Speaker’s Resource Network.
Workscene: BC Work Futures for Youth
Designed for youth to showcase close to 200 BC occupation profiles. Each two-page profile
includes information on the nature of the work, job locations, and skills required.
