December 16-18 - Ms. Jones, our school counsellor,
did a personal learning style test with the grade 6 students. She also
discussed ways to cope with anxiety and stress.
Ask your child which personality style (colour) he/she was!
January 6-14 - Ms. Jones will continue working with the grade 6
classes discussing important issues like healthy relationships, conflict, and bullying.
January 15- Ms. Jones has finished up her five H.C.E. sessions with the students.
The students learned many strategies for dealing with conflict and bullies.
One main focus was the Six Step Problem Solving Method.
Please encourage your child to use the strategies and discuss important issues at home.
In Social Studies, we will continue looking at Human Rights and the Rights of the Child. The students will compare their daily life to the life of children in low-income countries. We will also examine the ways Canada is involved in global trade (benefits and drawbacks) and child labour. The students will look at how statistics are presented and create their own graphs (circle graph, bar graph, etc.). In addition to these learning outcomes, we will learn how to read maps and legends (lines of longitude, latitude, world land heights, and world climates).
One main focus in Language Arts will be on writing detailed paragraphs. The students will begin by creating topic sentences and interesting leads/hooks. We will also use outlines and graphic organizers to develop supporting details and closing statements/conclusions. The final goal will be to have the students write an engaging  five paragraph essay.Â
We expect that the students are consistently using the skills we've practised in the daily edits (capitals, commas, quotation marks, homophones).    Â
In Health and Career Education (H.C.E.) we are just finishing up our unit on friendship, stereotyping, and discrimination. Our next focus will be on bullying, conflict, and peer pressure.Â
